Senna Signs For Williams In Emotional Deal

Bruno Senna, nephew of the late great Ayrton, has been signed to race for the Williams team in 2012. It is a team which had employed in his uncle in order to achieve great things in a partnership which could have brought great results, but was tragically cut short just three races in. On a day in which some criticised the team for dropping veteran Brazilian racer Rubens Barrichello, Bruno told the world how he felt as he also harked back to the team’s glory days:

“I feel very privileged Williams has selected me as one of their race drivers,” said Senna, who will make his debut for Williams in Jerez, Spain on 9 February in the first of the team’s winter tests.

“The team has a great heritage and I hope I can help write a good chapter in their history.”

A man who has had the burden of his uncle’s legacy on his shoulder all of his life, he spoke of how he deals with the burden and how the process of selection was on merit, not on anything else:

“The evaluation process has been intense and methodical, but the time I have spent in the factory has demonstrated the team has great people and all the resources needed to achieve better things this season.”

“It’s something that’s been present for me since my first race, and I have learned how to deal with the memories I bring of Ayrton.

“It’s very good for me to bring back memories of Ayrton in people. People are very fond of Ayrton and I am in no way trying to take his spotlight.

“It brings me a great feeling, and I’m sure it’s going to be more special every day.”

It is an exciting time for many as 2012 shall see the first serious chance Bruno has had in his short time. 2010 saw him spend the year with back-end strugglers and HRT, while 2011 contained just half a season with Lotus-Renault.

Qualifying 7th on his debut and scoring points in the following race, Senna did a solid job in 2011

The upcoming season will be the first time he has really been able to know his team prior to the opening race and also a chance to test decent machinery in the hope of improving any possible problems before the first Grand Prix. Willians have taken a risk in dropping experience for potential, but potential is something Bruno showed in 2011 and will be hoping to build on for 2012.
