Spotlight Increases On McLaren As Team Delay Driver Decisions Until December

The latest development in the story of McLaren’s driver line-up for next year has unfolded with the announcement that there will be no confirmation of who is driving for the team in 2015 until December at the earliest.

This means that Jenson Button will have to wait until the F1 season has ended before knowing whether he will have a drive in the sport next year. Button has said that he does not wish to drive in an uncompetitive car and has stated that he could race in other series’ if the door at McLaren is closed to him.

“Selecting the optimal driver line-up for a Formula 1 team is clearly an important process, and it is therefore one that requires precise and prolonged analysis,” said a statement released by McLaren.

“That being the case, and in order to avoid distracting the race team from its primary objective during the final grand prix weekend of the season, which is to secure the best possible on-track results, we have decided to defer our final deliberations relating to our 2015 driver line-up until a date no earlier than Monday December 1.”

It seems unlikely that Alonso and Button will be team-mates next year

It had been expected that Fernando Alonso’s deal to drive for McLaren from next season was to be announced before the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend. This has not happened and with Sebastian Vettel’s supposed jump to Ferrari not confirmed, this leaves three world championships currently without an official drive for next year.

Button is seen as the likely casualty of an Alonso arrival at McLaren, with the British driver’s salary said to cost a sizable amount more than that of Button’s current team-mate Kevin Magnussen. Button is also a lot closer to the exit door at the age of 34 than Magnussen who is 22.
